Think of the rescuers

I've spoken to or read reports from some people involved in the police or medical services in London since Thursday. They are exhausted, working flat out with little or no sleep. But the thought that haunts me is the scenes that the rescue and recovery teams must be confronted with, 100 feet below ground in the tunnels where three of the bobs went off. The heat, the darkness, the stench, the unimaginable horror. The Guardian has published an early account by Sergeant Steve Betts of the British Transport Police, one of the first to reach the underground train bombed between King's Cross and Russell Square.
